Message from the Director
Creating opportunities for children to grow, develop and learn is a major focus here at the Johnnesburg Children’s Home. Over the past few months, our determination to host as many activities and events and programmes as possible has paid off.
The year began with all the children very determined to do well at school. In this they have been further encouraged by the invaluable efforts of our homework support volunteers.
A number of children have begun attending regular music lessons, while the sports programmes have encouraged lots of healthy fun. The children have had lessons in swimming, karate, soccer and netball. Dedicated volunteers are now also offering regular yoga classes as well as aerobics. For the younger children, there is story time and board games on the weekends. We are deeply grateful for our volunteers who are so selfless in their support.
It has been tremendously exciting to set up our charity shop which has been a great success, thanks again to practical support from many of you. It was especially lovely to have a visit from the Street family sisters (previously residents here at the home), who brought a van and trailer full of valuable pre-loved household items and clothes for our shop.
Since we opened the Westcott Hall up to the public, it has become a popular training venue; please consider hiring the venue for your next event – we would love to host you. This quote from one of our customers says it all: “I want to thank the good people of the Joburg Children’s Home (…) Ali who handled the arrangements and the staff who looked after us so well. It is such a lovely venue for workshops, with excellent service, support and food – and very affordable – with a very human touch.” Doug Reeler.
Thank you once again to all our supporters and volunteers for your encouraging phone calls, donations and hands on help.[ Posted 24 July 2018 ]
