From the Director’s Desk
I would like to thank you for faithfully supporting the Johannesburg Children’s Home and helping our children achieve success ... each in their own way. Several children left us at the end of last year, but we will continue to ‘be there’ for them and look forward to seeing them grow and flourish on their journey.
To those who have become mentors or homework volunteers at our home – you are literally changing children’s lives. We truly appreciate the many hours you put in with the children. As a direct result of your involvement, we have seen wonderful improvements – in school performance, behaviour, English language skills, self-confidence, motivation and vision for the future. There is no doubt that you have helped lay foundations for bright futures.
Our staff must also be congratulated for their selflessness. Care workers have been trained in a model which focuses on positive reinforcement, which has proved very helpful and the children are responding well.
Our operations team implemented several new entrepreneurial projects at the home this year: our delicious food platters are proving popular, we’ve had the first guests at our guest house, and the charity shop continues to do well.
In addition our borehole is now fully functional, we are harvesting fresh produce from our veggie garden and all our food waste is now recycled. Our music room is equipped and we hope to offer music lessons soon.
Sincere appreciation to the many donors who have made all this possible.
We are excited about the new opportunities in 2017 and encourage you to get in touch with us as we grow and develop our entrepreneurial projects, focus on further reducing our carbon footprint, look for music teachers and mentors and continue to create warmth and love for our children.
I’d like to leave you with these words by Maria Robinson: Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.[ Posted 20 January 2017 ]
