Make every minute count this Mandela Day
“It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.” – Nelson Mandela
This Mandela Day, 18 July, we invite you to spend 67 minutes (or more!) making a real difference in the lives of the 64 children at Johannesburg Children’s Home.
There’s something for everyone to get involved in – from creative, hands-on projects to simply sharing a boerewors roll and appreciating our children’s beautiful art.
💚 Volunteer opportunities:
Food Gardening:
Help us prepare the soil and plant fresh seedlings in our food garden. A donation of just R300 buys 150 seedlings – you can even pre-order!
Painting Palisade Fencing:
Put your brush skills to good use! We welcome donations of paint, undercoat, brushes, gloves and elbow grease.
Deep Cleaning Cottages:
Our family-style cottages could do with some TLC. Please bring sugar soap, buckets, cloths/sponges and old newspaper.
Sorting Donations:
Many hands make light work! Bring gloves and help us sort through donated items.
Outdoor volunteers – please wear old clothing, and don’t forget your hat and sunblock!
We kindly ask our visitors to also bring along items from our children’s needs list. Your thoughtful donations will directly support those who need it most.
🍔 What’s happening on the day:
- A 15–20 minute guided tour of the Home to learn more about our work and children.
- Children’s Art Display – come and admire the talent of our young artists.
- Tuckshop with snacks and drinks.
- Boerewors Roll & Cooldrink OR Chicken Burger & Cooldrink for just R50
(Cash or card accepted.)
🧡 Can’t make it in person?
No problem! You can still support our children by organising Checkers Sixty or other delivery service of items from our needs list delivered directly to us on the day. Any item – no matter how small – is a great help.
Or – even easier – donate online towards these and other needs.
Because every child deserves to feel loved, seen and supported.
Together, we can keep Madiba’s legacy alive – not just on 18 July, but every day.
