From the Managing Director’s Desk …
Funding remains the biggest challenge for any child and youth care centre in South Africa. The continuing downturn in the country’s economy (0.1% weaker in the first quarter of 2024), coupled with donors’ dwindling disposable income, is worrying, to say the least!
Fortunately, I am blessed with a highly motivated and enthusiastic team – always keen to conceptualise, develop and implement new initiatives for the future sustainability of our organisation.
I am also humbled by the vision of our board of governors, always supportive of our ideas, whilst making sure we are prudent with our spending.
As part of our income generating projects, the recently opened skills centre not only provides an opportunity for youth to master artisanal skills – but also enables us to repair donated furniture and restore it to its former glory.
In mid June we hosted a wine auction dinner at Courtyard Waterfall – another new fundraising initiative aimed at securing the money we need to provide the best possible care for our children.
The launch of the new minibike track next to the ECD is another income generating opportunity. Parents can book this area, equipped with mini tricycles, for kids’ parties. The children can learn basic traffic signs and enjoy a fun filled day with their friends under the supervision of our trained staff.
Our Thrift Up shop in Norwood continues to provide much needed funds. Support from the community has been great – thank you!
