Mother's Day

When you were little, who did you run to?

Remember when you were little and afraid of monsters under the bed? Somehow mom could make them go away. She was the one you ran to show the gold star you got in class … who cheered you on at sports day … kissed a grazed knee better … and believed in you, even when you made mistakes.

With Sunday being Mother’s Day, your thoughts may turn to memories of those happy childhood days.

Please spare a thought for children who are not so lucky. Those who’ve been hurt and let down in the past by the very person they should have been able to count on for unconditional love.

Our dedicated child care workers help children like these overcome the past and create happy childhood memories to carry with them into adulthood.

Mama G has been a child care worker at the Johannesburg Children’s Home for more than 20 years. Despite raising her own children, she still found more than enough love, care and gentle guidance to enable countless abused and neglected children to thrive.

Caring for up to ten children at a time – each carrying the scars of their previous experiences and the defences they’ve built to help them cope – can be challenging. But professionally trained child care workers like Mama G always find a way to build trust and reach the frightened child within. Children learn to believe in themselves again. They begin to laugh and look forward with confidence and hope in their hearts.

If you agree that a happy childhood is one of the most precious gifts you can have, please will you make your donation online now towards the cost of providing the best possible care for our children?

Your special Mother’s Day donation is a wonderful way to honour your own mom – whether or not she is still with you. A way of passing on the heritage of love and care that every child deserves.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there, who do an incredible job of raising happy, well-adjusted kids. And a special shout out to our dedicated surrogate ‘moms’ in charge of the 7 cottages at the Johannesburg Children’s Home. We salute you!
